The Menteith Hills provide a magnificent backdrop for this relatively shallow 700-acre water situated on the edge of the Trossachs National Park.
Reputedly the only 'Lake' in Scotland, the Lake of Menteith is home to Inchmahome Priory, a ruined Augustine Priory founded in 1238, which stands on the large island in the middle of this historic Lake.
Now a popular Scottish tourist destination, the priory once provided refuge for Mary Queen of Scots (admittedly as a four year old) and, a couple of hundred years earlier, Robert the Bruce was a frequent visitor.
Regarded as one of Scotlands premier Rainbow and Brown Trout venues (and stocked with 1200 trout every week!), the Lake of Menteith opens it's doors to pike fishing for just a handful of days each winter.
It has quickly gained a reputation as one of the UK's finest pike waters producing a pike of 39lb 8oz to Lynn Baker during last winters Pike Angler's Club organised event. |
